About Me

I was born in December, 1976 in San Francisco, California. My education journey has been a wild one. I attended six different elementary schools, two middle schools, one high school, two community colleges, and one university (twice). As you may have guessed, I have moved around a lot. I have lived my whole life in the SF Bay Area. I would call Petaluma my hometown but I have lived in Kentfield, Novato, Santa Rosa, Oakland, and Walnut Creek. Before becoming a teacher I worked as a record buyer for Green Apple Books and Music in San Francisco. I spent nearly a decade in the music retail industry but my resume includes temp worker, bouncer, cheese maker, food delivery, and kennel cleaner/painter as past gainful employment.

I currently live in Martinez with my wife and daughter, as well as our dog. My interests include photography, reading, music, and cinema. I have a tendency to create lists and some people have described my organizational needs as obsessive. I am fond of reporting earthquake data to the USGS.

I am a superfan of The Simpsons. My favorite films include Cool Hand Luke, In The Mood For Love, The Battle of Algiers, and Kagamusha. My favorite bands are NoMeansNo, Yo La Tengo, and Sonic Youth. I recommend the writing of Stephen Jay Gould, Ernest Hemingway, Bernard Malamud, Joseph Heller, Eric Hobsbawm, and Howard Zinn.

My last name is Swedish and is spelled Hallqvist by my relatives there. I have never been to Sweden, nor have I ever left the United States. I love to travel but I HATE flying. I somehow have managed to visit the following amazing places: Portland, Oregon; New Orleans, Louisiana; Baltimore, Maryland; Austin, Texas; and Cooperstown, New York.

I am an avid fan of baseball, particularly my beloved San Fransico Giants. I have also recently been converted to a hockey fan.

Parents and students should feel free to contact me with questions or concerns. Email is best and I will get back to you as soon as is possible. Appointments are available upon request.
